Connect Union Bay to U-Village
Help us convince UW to allow equitable access to public lands!
The Problem
The Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA) is a 74-acre wetland owned by the State of Washington and managed by the University of Washington. This remarkable space includes miles of shoreline, walking trails, bridges, and gardens. Unfortunately, UW has chosen to block public access with a mile-long fence. The fence pushes pedestrians against busy roads and terminates at large parking lots without sidewalks. UW has said that people that want to access UBNA should enter through the Center for Urban Horticulture in Laurelhurst, which is a location that is only practical to drive to. They have also said they do not want to add a break in the fence as it could let in transit users, cyclists, or the homeless.
The Opportunity
There is a simple solution that is modest and highly feasible: create an opening in the fence near the bus stop across from the main entrance into U-Village, then add a trail to UBNA from there. It would go along Ravenna Creek and connect to UBNA trails and a pedestrian bridge over the creek that leads to the UW rail station. The route is both beautiful and practical, ideal for transit commuters and recreational users alike. Design and build could be funded with open space and park funds, similar to how Yesler Swamp boardwalks were built in 2016 (on the East side of UBNA).
UW Should Allow This Path
UW’s Campus Master Plan has only one goal for the fenced off intramural field area: “Improve pedestrian environment and universal access”. Within UBNA the proposed trail goes along decommissioned Douglas Road, which the UBNA management plan specifically recommends turning into a trail. The UBNA management plan goes on to say that UW should have an “overarching goal” to “increase the area’s service to the public”, and that “an expansion of the trail system would increase the site’s value and its utilization by the public”. The trail is also clearly aligned with UW's sustainability plan and active transportation goals.
What is needed to make this happen?
What we need is more voices like this one from Robert Swan, a UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences Instructor located in UBNA:"UW students are some of the most active, passionate, and hard working volunteers out there - they're itching to get their hands dirty and make a tangible positive impact, and this pathway provides a rare chance to benefit everyone and everything involved - improving equitable access, creating green spaces for people and wildlife, and allowing UW students to improve their community while helping build it all."
We are asking the Washington State legislature to add a budget proviso requiring UW Administration to allow this trail to be designed and built. UBNA is Washington State public land and UW is receiving billions in funding from Washington State. All we are asking is that UW stop actively blocking access to UBNA for people that walk, bike, and use transit. Please add your voice: Why do you think UW Administration should allow this trail to be built?

U District Advocates push for expanded access to the Union Bay Natural Area
A mile-long fence separates UW’s Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA) from the surrounding community. Local advocates are pushing for permission from UW to open a gate next to the bus stop on Northeast 45th Street and build a trail along Ravenna Creek that connects to an existing pedestrian bridge inside the UBNA, arguing the current separation contradicts the university’s “Be Boundless” motto.

Op-Ed: UW’s Union Bay Hypocrisy: Public Land, Private Fence
Open a path through the fence to improve access to the Union Bay Natural Area.
The Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA) is 74 acres of public open space with miles of trails and shoreline habitat. Located between the University of Washington light rail station and U Village, it’s a breathtaking natural environment, owned by the State of Washington but managed by the University of Washington (UW).

"This is such a fabulous idea!! ... We should maximize this public space for people to experience the waterfront and nature in this area, and make safe and enjoyable connections for pedestrians and cyclists using this area."

"We're spending so much on this car infrastructure--on cars that are killing us and the planet--we can at least connect some trails."

"It is time that we place more emphasis on the wellbeing of the environment, wildlife and those who walk and bicycle over the tendency to elevate the automobile over all else."
